World energy leaders to meet in Wellington

Jul 24, 2018 | Asia Pacific Energy Leaders Summit

Energy leaders from around the world have Wellington in their sights with the announcement that New Zealand’s capital city will host the Asia Pacific energy sector’s premier event.

The BusinessNZ Energy Council (BEC) – a division of the country’s leading advocacy body – and the World Energy Council (WEC) will host their biennial Energy Leaders’ Summit from October 31 to November 1 at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

The 3D Vision – New Energy Perspectives event has attracted Government Ministers and Chief Executives from New Zealand and overseas plus senior executives, policy makers, investors and business operators from the international sector.

All will have a common motivation, says BEC Chair David Caygill: how to navigate the disruptive forces that are provoking profound global change in the energy sector.

“This world-leading Summit comes at a time of unprecedented change for the energy sector,” Mr Caygill says. “It builds on our 2016 event by moving beyond the identification of risks and challenges that the sector faces to understanding, owning and acting on them.

“But even in the few years since the last Summit, dramatic and rapid change – political, economic, social and technological – is enabling bold environmental and market outcomes.

“It’s a critical time to bring new perspectives and insights to the challenges.”

World Energy Council Secretary-General Christoph Frei says three interrelated topics are challenging the sector: the need to decarbonise, the opportunity to decentralise, and the advantage of digitalising the production and consumption of energy.

“Electricity is the new oil – the 3Ds are driving the grand energy transition with breathtaking speed and it is critical that business leaders stay on top of the innovation horizon. The Summit will debate conflicting signals, new trends and practical solutions.”

The international delegation will provide an opportunity to showcase respective country capabilities in the provision of renewable energy, and to demonstrate leadership on climate change action, Mr Frei says.

“This invaluable learning and networking event will provide a unique platform to challenge ideas and reach new understandings as we look to future proof the energy systems of the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.”
