New Zealand energy scenarios launched
|
BEC and EECA are delighted to share our updated energy scenarios - TIMES-NZ 2.0. This bottom-up tool helps policy makers, investors and consumers think about the choices and trade-offs between available technologies to produce a least-cost energy system. In both scenarios, Tui and Kea, fossil fuel use (and emissions) decline strongly, while growing electrification is met by wind and solar generation. Read more...

Consultation on reducing transport emissions
|
Ministry of Transport's consultation Hikina te Kohupara Transport Emissions: Pathways to Net Zero explores four pathways towards reducing our transport emissions with a focus on three key initiatives 1. Changing the way we travel; 2. Improving our passenger vehicles and 3. Supporting a more efficient freight system. Submissions close on 25 June. Read more...

Clean car package announced
|
The Government are already taking steps to reduce transport emissions announcing a Clean Car Discount. Kiwis purchasing electric or low-emission vehicles new to NZ may be able to receive up to $8,625 back. The Government have also proposed a Sustainable Biofuel Mandate aiming to reduce emissions from those cars already in the country, as well as trucks, ships and planes. Consultation closes 26 July. The Government has released the Final Advice from the Climate Change Commission. Our summary gives and overview the key changes made and details relating to each sector. Switzerland seeking fourth carbon offset deal
|
Switzerland are eyeing their fourth bilateral contract to purchase carbon offsets from Thailand. Despite relatively small emissions (45MtCO2e per year) Switzerland are one of a handful of nations exploring foreign credit options. The country does not purchase credits from forestry, but instead selects credits which will go towards product-based undertakings like renewable energy projects, bio-digesters and cookstoves. GIC seeks views on gas market settings
|
Gas Industry Company have released a consultation paper about the role of gas in supporting the energy transition and the fitness of current market, commercial and regulatory settings. The paper reflects on views heard and seeks your views about the current settings. After consultation, a report will be developed and published in August. Submissions can be made in writing by 24 June. Read more...

Genesis, Methanex deal improves energy security
|
This month Genesis signed a gas sup-ply agreement with Methanex that will improve energy security for New Zealand over winter. Genesis secured up to 4.4PJ, the energy equivalent of having up to 84% of the storage capacity of Lake Taupo. Methanex will be stopping one of their production lines for three months to make this possible, an excellent example of cross-sector co-operation. Read more...

New Zealand Oil & Gas Group have purchased interests in three gas producing projects located in Australia's Northern Territory. The acquisition, which is subject to shareholder approval, would increase NZOG's reserves by 14.5 million barrels of oil equivalent - a near five-fold increase. "Like NGOC, Australia values clean burning locally produced natural gas as a key part of the transition to a low carbon future" says Chief Executive Andrew Jefferies. Read more...

Insights from Vector's EV smart charging trial
|
EVs present a huge opportunity for New Zealand to reduce carbon emissions but with 90% of charging happening in the home, left unmanaged the electricity distribution network could become constrained requiring costly upgrades. Vector is conducting the largest trial of its type in New Zealand to understand how smart charging, combined with intelligent load management, can help us seamlessly integrate and support EV uptake.
